The Arts Council of Greater New Haven Takes Note of NHOCO
"Mark Bailey, who studied at the Institute [of Sacred Music at Yale], has planned a compelling concert season for the New Haven Oratorio Choir and Orchestra, of which he’s the music director. As Mendelssohn’s 200th birthday is celebrated worldwide, Bailey’s period-instrument and vocal ensemble will offer its own take on the occasion with “Mendelssohn’s Muse,” a program of works by composers whose work influenced Mendelssohn, as well as Mendelssohn’s cantata, Jesu, meine Freude, a nod to Bach’s work of the same name, which the Choir and Orchestra performed last season. Bailey’s ensemble will also put on a Baroque Music Gala that will culminate in a performance of Handel’s coronation anthem Zadok the Priest and a Russian Baroque choral program in which Bailey, a Russian Baroque musicscholar, will introduce audiences to music set to sacred text from the Russian Orthodox Church."
